Bringing Classrooms to the Water, The Story of Bangladesh’s Floating Schools

 

In Bangladesh, where annual monsoon floods can submerge up to two-thirds of the country, ensuring uninterrupted education has been a persistent challenge. Innovative solutions like floating schools have emerged to address this issue, bringing classrooms to students even during the most severe floods.​ Floating schools are essentially schools on boats, designed to navigate the waterways of Bangladesh's flood-prone regions. These schools serve dual purposes: transporting students from their homes and providing a stable platform for education. Each boat is equipped with a classroom that can accommodate 30–35 students, internet access, a library, and solar-powered computers.


Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha: Pioneering Floating Education

 

A notable organization leading this initiative is Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha, founded by architect Mohammed Rezwan. Since 2002, they have operated a fleet of floating schools, libraries, health clinics, and training centers, serving close to 150,000 people annually in Bangladesh's flood-prone areas.

The introduction of floating schools has significantly reduced dropout rates in affected regions. Girls and young women, in particular, benefit as these schools eliminate the need for long, unsafe journeys to distant schools. Additionally, the schools offer evening classes for adults, promoting literacy and awareness about health, nutrition, and sustainable farming practices.

The success of Bangladesh's floating schools has inspired similar initiatives in countries like Nigeria and Colombia, where communities face comparable challenges due to flooding. These schools have become symbols of resilience and adaptability, showcasing how indigenous solutions can effectively address global issues like climate change. ​
